Alliance partnerships

To better achieve its objectives of global influence, the International Co-operative Alliance has a consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and works in partnership with several institutions and organizations:

  • Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) is a Committee made up of the cooperative movement and the United Nations and its agencies. Members work together on equal terms to promote and coordinate sustainable cooperative development by promoting and raising awareness on cooperatives, holding policy dialogues and advocating policies that enable cooperative success, working together on technical cooperation activities and sharing knowledge and information;
  • Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO): The International Co-operative Alliance signed a Memorandum of Understanding with FAO in October 2013 that highlights the “unique” contribution of agricultural cooperatives in fighting against hunger and poverty. The aim is to develop common initiatives and to boost the participation of the co-operative movement in the FAO as well as to develop co-operatives in developing countries to address food security and safety and help farmers move out of poverty;
  • UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA): The United Nations system values the important role of co-operatives in social and economic development and their importance in the people-centered approach to development. In addition, co-operatives play an important role in an increasingly integrated global economy as well as in fostering peace-building among peoples, communities and nations.
  • Other UN agencies and international groups: with the aim of reinforcing its role and global influence, the Alliance works in developing closer partnerships with several other UN agencies and international organizations.
