Throughout 2025, the ICA is publishing monthly newsletters celebrating the International Year of Cooperatives – and the latest is out now! This issue focuses on how cooperatives are building a better world by ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages, in line with the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG3).
The newsletter includes details on a new policy brief published by the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) and the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), which explores how cooperatives contribute to equitable, community-centred healthcare systems.
To showcase cooperatives’ role in meeting SDG3, the newsletter also includes examples of cooperatives providing essential health services, expanding access to insurance, and supporting vulnerable populations, from Uganda to Brazil, India and Spain.
Diving deeper into this topic is Dr Rüdiger Krech, the Director of the World Health Organisation’s Health Promotion Department. In an interview with the ICA, he shares his thoughts on SDG3, and how co-ops can contribute to advancing health and wellbeing for all.
The newsletter also highlights how cooperatives have continued to engage with governments and policymakers to articulate and demonstrate cooperatives’ contributions to sustainable development and achieving the SDGs, including at the Global Government Summit, the VI World Forum on Local Economic Development, and the UN meeting for stakeholders ahead of the World Social Summit.
And cooperative movements around the world are also joining in the IYC celebrations. The newsletter includes updates on the recent ICA Board meeting in the Dominican Republic for a special session addressed by the country’s president and two events hosted recently by the Swedish cooperative movement, during which it showcased the sector’s contribution to a more sustainable and inclusive business community.
As cooperatives continue to showcase their work throughout the IYC, this newsletter will continue to highlight what is happening in different regions via its events list and gallery.
The newsletter is brought to you in collaboration with Co-op News.
