Fifty lawyers from 30 jurisdictions apply to join the ICA Global cooperative law network

19 Feb 2021

In November 2020 the ICA Global Office launched a call for legal experts to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cooperative law.

The initiative aims to support the ICA’s work on promoting cooperative law and defending the right of cooperatives to practice and profess the cooperative identity, especially during these unprecedented times. Several jurisdictions around the world have amended their legislation to accommodate administrative challenges related to the pandemic, such as online general assemblies, extension of SMEs or relief packages to cooperatives.

Along with other tasks, the network being created will take stock of as many amendments and legal developments as possible, and act as a platform for peer-to-peer learning and technical exchanges.

The office has received 50 applications so far from more than 30 jurisdictions around the world, and is gearing towards the applications deadline, 31 March, 2021, to launch the online platform aimed to facilitate discussions among the legal experts. More information on the call here.

With this call, the ICA is building upon the ongoing actions on cooperative law across the organisation, including legal counseling for members, reconstitution of the ICA CLC, as well as the legal frameworks analysis research under the ICA-EU Partnership.

If you are a legal expert associated with cooperatives and wish to be part of this unique open network, please don't lose time, and write to the ICA at legislation@ica.coop
