ICFO fosters fisheries talents in developing countries

The International Co-operative Fisheries Organisation (ICFO), chaired by President Lee Jong-koo of Korean National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, is making great endeavors to foster talents in the fisheries fields especially in the underdeveloped countries.

The ICFO and Pukyong National University concluded a memorandum of understanding on cooperation for nurturing talents in the field of fisheries, in attendance of Mr. Lee Jong-koo, chairman of ICFO, Mr. Kim Young-seup, president of Pukyong National University and other related participants, on 24th January 2014 at Pukyong National University, Busan, Korea.

The two organizations signed the MOU, mutually recognizing the need to build up human resource in the fisheries sectors in developing countries for sustainable development of fisheries and vigorous cooperative movement around the world.

Pukyong National University has launched a 2-year graduate course for 2 students from developing countries, who had completed university education in fisheries or fisheries-related fields. The ICFO plans to select 2 university graduates every year with the support from Pukyong National University. The tuition fee will be fully funded by Pukyong National University. The ICFO will offer scholarship benefits such as airfare and boarding expenses including daily expenses.

Moreover, the two organizations will spare no efforts in implementing consistent collaboration and information exchange for human resource development in the fisheries sectors.

Chairman Lee Jong-koo said, "It is essential to encourage cultivating of competent individuals in the fisheries fields. We will put forth a multilateral effort into developing and supporting the best minds in the fisheries sectors in developing countries."

The ICFO, as a leading organization for international cooperative movement, is receiving a favorable evaluation on its efforts to share Korean cooperatives' best practices with developing countries by spreading Korea's distinctive model for cooperative organizations.

This MOU on nurturing global talents will help develop the fishing industry of developing countries by sharing academic expertise of Korea with other countries.
