Co-op models in housing explored at Intersections 2017

23 Oct 2017

Co-operative housing models were a key topic at the Intersections 2017 conference on 9-12 October in Oakland, California.

The three-day event was organised by Grounded Solutions Network, which promotes housing solutions that remain affordable for generations so that communities can strengthen their foundation.

Intersections 2017 is North America’s leading conference on community led housing. It looked at how to work collectively in order to make inclusive communities the new norm.

Sessions and seminars were led by professionals dedicated to building equitable and inclusive communities, including representatives from housing co-ops and community land trusts from Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and Puerto Rico. The conference also included sessions on the co-operative model and movement.

Leilani Farha, special rapporteur to the United Nations on the Right to Adequate Housing, shared the Shift Campaign, which 'shifts' the practice of community-led housing from the margins into the international spotlight, and asserts that it’s a key solution to our world's affordable housing crisis.

The conference gathered more than 500 project leaders, networks, CBOs, NGOs, umbrella organisations, researchers, housing professionals, and local governments.
