The International Day of Co-operatives 2014 will be commemorated across the world on 5 July under the theme “Co-operative enterprises achieve sustainable development for all”.

To mark the occasion, the UN Department for Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), in partnership with the International Co-operative Alliance, will organise an event to highlight the principles, values and operational realities of co-operatives that make them unique instruments for achieving sustainable development and showcase the importance of the business model to realising people-centered, inclusive development, post-2015.

The event will be held on 10 July at the UN Headquarters in New York and will count with the participation of Mike Beall, chief executive of the National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA) and Ed Potter, Executive Director of the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF) Americas, along with representatives from UN Agencies and national governments.

The event will be open to UN Member States, UN Secretariat Departments, Agencies, Funds and Programmes, development partners, co-operatives and civil society.

For more information and to register please contact Maxwell Haywood (haywood@un.org) at the Division for Social Policy and development of UN-DESA, with a copy to Wenyan Yang (yang@un.org), and Astrid Hurley (hurleya@un.org).
