New marketing and digital strategies for credit unions aimed at the millennial generation

21 Nov 2014

The World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) has launched a new programme with various digital strategies to help credit unions build a stronger relationship with the millennial generation.

The “We See You Too” (weCU2) programme will include online podcasts with industry expert interviews, videos, product case studies, Twitter chats, Slide Share presentations, an interactive blog and direct feedback from millennials around the world.

The programme serves a double purpose. It aims to familiarise and educate millennials on how their values correspond with credit unions and also give credit unions a full understanding of the millennium generations unique needs and “digital DNA”.

WOCCU along with the Credit Union National Association will also co-host an event dedicated to millennials at the 2015 World Credit Union Conference in Denver.

Engaging with the millennium generation is key to increasing adult young membership in credit unions. This is particularly important as by 2017 millennials are expected to become the largest consumer spending demographic.

The millennial generation includes 80m millennials in North America and 2.5bn worldwide.

Introducing the weCU2 programme in a special video, Maggie Lin, marketing specialist at Vancity Credit and a millennial herself, says:

“Like my generation, credit unions are community focused. Our team members are your members, our branches are right around the corner.” She adds that the new programme aims to inform the millennial generation about credit unions, rather than sell the idea to them. WeCU2 will provide successful marketing strategies to attract young people.

Commenting on the new programme, Victor Corro, vice president of the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions, said: "Youth and technology are key elements to growing our industry. WOCCU recently challenged the global community to add 50 million new members by 2020. This initiative not only raises awareness of that challenge, but also provides best practices for membership growth."

The first podcast of weCU2 will be available next week. It features contributions from industry expert Jake Fuentes, chief executive of Level Money. The podcast will be promotes by WOCCU on its social networks.
