The Alliance's member COOPFED - the Sri Lanka Consumer Cooperative Societies Federation Limited, launches an appeal to co-operators worldwide for support in resolving damage and loss after the recent heavy rains in Aranayake. The region was severely affected on 19 May 2016, by landslides which caused 83 deaths and 127 disappearances. More people were affected by the floods in Colombo, Gampaha and Rathnapura in Sri Lanka. At least 325,000 in total were affected by the natural disaster. Many houses, factories, co-operative outlets were destryed or incurred damage. The displaced are seeking refuge in temporary residences.
As Sri Lanka's top level co-operative organization, COOPFED, the Sri Lanka Consumer Cooperative Societies Federation Limited is supplying essential foods and arranging donations.
COOPFED has set up bank accounts to which monetary donations for disaster relief may be sent, in local and foreign currency. Dryfoods, sanitary items and medication may be sent to the address provided further.
